Flowers, Fun, and More as Spring Enters the District
By Siddharth Bharani-Dharan
Spring is upon us in Washington DC as we finally shift away from below freezing temperatures and snow. The clocks recently moved one hour forwards, which signifies earlier sunrises, later sunsets, and more sunlight.Warmer weather gives us Grad Hoyas the chance to spend more time outside with our friends as we enter the latter half of the semester.
Luckily, Washington DC is a very beautiful place in the spring time where many events and festivals take place every single week. There are a particular few festivals that Grad Hoyas love to frequent on a yearly basis.
National Cherry Blossom Festival
Starting on March 20th, the National Cherry Blossom Festival will last until April 12th. Kids, students, local residents, and many tourists from all over the world will be visiting the festival. The busiest time of the festival will be between March 28th and April 1st where the cherry blossoms will look their best. A large parade will be held one day before the festival’s end. That is certainly something Grad Hoyas may not want to miss.
Blossom Kite Festival
Held on March 28th from 10am to 4pm, the Blossom Kite Festival is a local favorite. People of all ages attend and have a great time while they can make kites, watch demonstrations, compete against others, and enjoy music performances among the many other available activities. This is a great opportunity for Grad Hoyas to relax on a Saturday afternoon with our friends on the Washington Monument grounds.
Petalpalooza
An eight hour long event from 1pm to 9pm on April 4th, Petalpalooza is a part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. A day filled with musical performances, art, singing, beverages, activities, and several other entertainment options. The event concludes with an incredible fireworks display during the final 30 minutes coupled with music in the background.
Washington DC has a great atmosphere for the spring time and this year is no different. Grad Hoyas should definitely be out and about with their friends this spring as several fun events are scheduled. If you would like the full schedule of events in the coming months, it is available right here on the official Washington DC website.
